Are baseboards necessary with flooring?

Baseboards are to the floor, as moldings are to the ceiling. They provide visual interest where those surfaces meet the wall.

Their purpose is so much more, though. They protect the wall from moisture, vacuums, and other things that cause harm.

That makes them a necessity in the eyes of many. So, yes, consider a baseboard when you get new floors.

Why are baseboards such a critical part of the flooring installation?

The floor will look unfinished without a baseboard, with trim and edges in full view. Also, the joint where the floor and wall meet can look unsightly. Finally, as we mentioned before, they protect the wall.

Many installers will install the baseboard as part of the overall installation. Therefore, they have many of the same tools to install flooring and baseboard.

Hence, there will be less damage if the existing one has to come off the wall and be replaced. Inquire about the flooring company policy.

Are baseboards installed before or after flooring?

Often, baseboards are installed before the flooring is in place. This results in a gap under the baseboard where the many types of floors can slide in easily.

Also, if the baseboard is installed first, you don't need to worry about dripping paint or debris onto the flooring.

There is one exception to the rule. Carpet flooring is installed before the baseboard.

Rugs have trim and edges. This can complicate matters. If the carpet is installed before the baseboard, it can all be tucked in and out of the site.

Every flooring store has its method of installing the baseboard. Find out what yours prefers.
